March 2019: Ch1 Demo + Creature Art


With the release of our latest demo, it's time to kick off monthly* devlogs for Monospaced Lovers! 
* by "monthly", I really mean "hopefully monthly"

First off: The current demo features all of the content for chapter 1, except for a few of the boss's attacks. The code for the boss battles is working, but I didn't have time to make all of the attack patterns for this release. The game is still in pre-alpha with some placeholder assets, but if you're a dev (or if you're just very curious), you can check it out at the bottom of this post.

Secondly, we've finally replaced the placeholder art for the NPC creatures! If you played previous demos, you might remember the ill-fitting pixel art raccoon and Kenney's vector slime. Well, those days are behind us. Here are the idle loops for the four creature types (art by sphenops):


Of course, you won't be able to understand most of the creatures without obtaining an item first. The tanuki speak English, but the rest use a unique cipher.


To recap, as of this demo, you can...

  • Collect 6 data chips and 6 coins
  • Play through the Fox Shrine dungeon
  • Play through the Sewers (level 1) and fight the first boss (kind of)
  • Enjoy the dialogue and cutscenes for all of chapter 1!
